Nancy Shuey, 85, Vero Beach

Nancy Shuey, 85, of Vero Beach, passed away on May 9, 2015, at VNA Hospice Home.

She had been in ill health the last several months and also spent a short time at the Atlantic Healthcare Center.

Born on Sept. 8, 1929 in Haddonfield, N.J., Shuey grew up in Sewell and Pitman, N.J. She then married John K. George (deceased) and moved to Greensburg, Penn., where she raised her two children, John W. George and Susan K. Howze. Later in life, she adopted her grandson, Vance E. Phillips at age nine and raised him through his graduation at Latrobe High School in southwestern Penn.

Shuey married Richard Shuey (deceased) in Greensburg and later retired as the Hospitality Shop Manager at the Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg. She then moved to Florida to be closer to her sister, Florence.

Shuey was active in the Westminster Presbyterian Church and the local Red Hat Society.

She is survived by her two sisters, Florence Texier and Helen Wilson of North Carolina, along with many nieces and nephews.

Her family will be forever grateful to her faithful caretaker and good friend, Chris Dumas. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh and caring ways. She made friends easily wherever she went and touched the lives of many people. Her grandson Vance benefited the most from her love, generosity and kindness.

Local services will be held at 12 p.m., Sunday, May 17, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach. Final services will be held in Greensburg, Penn., on May 23 at the United Church of Christ at 10 a.m., with internment immediately following at the St. Clair Cemetery, next to her parents Brita and John Woodward. Remembrances will be accepted at the Westminster Presbyterian Church and the VNA Hospice Home. A butterfly has now granted Nancy’s final wish and the mockingbirds will sing their forever song.
