Crash on US 1 knocks out power, restrains traffic in Sebastian

SEBASTIAN — Southbound US 1 at eastbound County Road 512 in Sebastian will remain restricted to one lane for the next couple hours as emergency crews work to repair damage done when a vehicle crashed into a telephone pole Wednesday afternoon.

The traffic signal at US 1 and eastbound CR 512 is out and drivers are encouraged to use caution through the area.

Sebastian Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Marcinik said an 84-year-old driver, identified as Jay Waltz of Vero Beach, crashed his vehicle into the pole, causing downed lines and knocking out the traffic signal.

The crash happened at about 4:25 p.m.

The officer on scene could not determine the cause of the crash, Sgt. Macinik said, because the driver could not recall what happened.

Waltz was treated on scene for injuries but declined transport to the hospital, Sgt. Marcinik said.

Florida Power and Light is on scene working to restore power in the area.

Sgt. Marcinik said it would be another couple hours before US 1 southbound is fully restored.
