INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Dr. Mark Rendell has officially gone from Superintendent-select to Superintendent-hired after the Indian River County School Board unanimously approved his 3-year contract Tuesday night.
After the meeting, Dr. Rendell signed the contract.
“It feels incredible,” he said just before signing the contract, adding that he had worked long and hard to get where he is. “It’s gratifying” that the School Board recognized what he brings to the table and has confidence in him leading the School District.
“I’m very glad,” Chairman Matt McCain said before presenting the contract to his fellow Board members. “I’m very thankful for this day” – the School District has a great leader and the search is over.
Though Board members approved the contract unanimously, none offered comment prior to the vote.
“I just want to say ‘thank you,’” Dr. Rendell said after the 5-0 vote. He added that he believes being selected as Superintendent is an honor and a privilege to serve Indian River County. He also said he looks forward to supporting the District’s students and staff and help the District fulfill its mission of serving every student with excellence.
Dr. Rendell will replace retiring Superintendent Dr. Fran Adams, whose last day is June 30. Drs. Rendell and Adams will work together in June to lower the learning curve.
“I know we can make this a smooth transition,” Dr. Adams said of her successor.
Dr. Rendell will become the Superintendent on July 1 and will earn a salary of $160,000 plus benefits, including at least $3,000 for civic and community relations – i.e. membership dues and luncheons to name a couple.
After the second year of the contract, the School Board can decide whether to extend his contract to a fourth year.
Dr. Rendell has most recently been the Deputy Superintendent of the St. Lucie County School District and lives in Brevard County. He said after the meeting that he and his wife are preparing to close on a home in Vero Beach in June and plan to make the move to Indian River County in July.
