UPDATED: Fire at Critter Haven under control

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A building at Critter Haven, a sanctuary for abused exotic and unwanted animals, in the 5300 block of 17 St. SW was engulfed by a fire. The blaze has since been doused and the scene is under control.

It is VeroNews.com’s understanding the the building on fire was a secondary structure not containing many animals.

A neighbor rescued the owner’s three small dogs off the back porch, according to witnesses. Animal control is on scene to assess the situation and see if any other animals need care, according to Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
