Indian River County files injunction regarding railroad bonds

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Indian River County government officials are moving forward with a promised federal lawsuit challenging the U.S. Department of Transportation’s issuance of bonds for the All Aboard Florida high-speed rail project.

County Attorney Dylan Reingold filed an injunction on behalf of the County, the County’s Emergency Services District, and the Old Vero Ice Age Sites Committee.

“Today, Indian River County and the other plaintiffs filed motions for summary judgment, a temporary restraining order and/or a preliminary injunction in that lawsuit,” Reingold said in a short prepared statement.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has approved issuance of $1.75 billion in government bonds for the All Aboard Florida project, which is expected to bring 32 trains daily barreling through Indian River County’s downtowns and residential neighborhoods at speeds of up to 110 miles per hour.

Indian River County last year strongly opposed the train and has committed $2.7 million over the next three years to fight it.

The suit names as defendants Peter M. Rogoff, in his capacity as the Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy of the U.S. Department of Transportation; and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
