LETTER: Out-of-state vacationers want reconsideration of Vero rental rules

We would like to weigh in on the new code enforcement of having a minimum of 30 days for rentals in Vero Beach.

Our family has been coming to Vero Beach for a few years now, and just love the small town community and the atmosphere.

When we worked full time we discovered this community after being at Disney for a week and rented a lovely condo in Central Beach for a week and our family enjoyed the beach, the restaurants, the shopping and the people.

It is very upsetting to us that Vero is implementing this by-law to restrict the rentals for families like us. My husband and myself recently retired and were able to rent for two months this last season, which was great and will do for hopefully many years to come. We have met so many people when walking who were there from 1 Week to 6 months during the winter season. Everyone is friendly and respectful.

We met many locals who said that after the end of April it is like a ghost town which we can’t imagine as it is so quiet compared to where we come from, so we can only think that the Vero restaurants, shops, and locals would welcome the dollars from the short term rentals.

Members of our family had made arrangements to rent a condo in the Central Beach area for a week in July after taking their kids to Disney, but got notice that it had to be cancelled because of this new bylaw. They had two weeks booked, one in Disney and one in Vero Beach, and just lets say that “she” was looking forward to the boutiques on Ocean Drive and they would eat out every night at the local restaurants we have told them about the area, as this a real vacation for them.

We keep up to date with the 32963 newspaper and subscribe to the Vero Beach magazine, and the only negative we have seen is from a person who rents a big house out to weddings, big groups etc, and the Dr. next door was complaining. Okay so we can understand that, but that instance should be dealt with and not be a reason to implement an unreasonable bylaw to everyone who rents out to responsible adults and families.

We would also like to know how you implement this enforcement, as so many rentals have garages and underground parking/garages so how will they know from license plates who are there weekly or monthly? We saw the code enforcement vehicles this year but also know they just drove by some that were probably rented weekly, as how can they figure that out? They cannot possibly figure out who is there for a week or a month on all rentals. We would ride our bikes to South Beach almost daily and there were always different vehicles and families in that area.

We hope you as the Mayor and councilors will reconsider your bylaw.

Sincerely,

Shelley and Al Popovich
