Carol Jeannie Ackman, of Sebastian, passed away on April 4, 2015, after a year-long battle with cancer.
She is survived by her sisters Mimi and Saradelle; her brother Larry; her children David, Thomas, Elizabeth, and Christopher; and her grandchildren Stephanie, Andrew, and Zsofia.
She was preceded in death by her husband Douglas, and her brothers Frederick, Jacque, and Dwight.
She was born Carol Jean Sterenberg, to Frederick Sterenberg and Edith Hinds in 1934 in Erie, Ill. She grew up in Sterling, Ill. Ackman graduated from Swedish American Nursing School in Rockford, Ill., in 1955 with her RN. She graduated from College of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill., now St. Francis University, in 1986 with a B.S. in Health Sciences.
Ackman worked as a nurse for 25 years. Most recently she volunteered at Sebastian River Medical Center and Sebastian Inlet State Park. She lived in Wisconsin for 15 years before heading south to North Carolina and finally Sebastian. She loved crocheting, watching football, traveling, volunteering, getting involved with activities at church and spending time with friends and family.
A Memorial Service with be held Thursday, April 16, at 2 p.m. at Christ by the Sea United Methodist Church 3755 Hwy A1A, Vero Beach. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Christ by the Sea UMC Ministries (772) 231-1661.
