First Baptist Church celebrates 100 years April 17th through 19th

VERO BEACH — Dr. J. C. DuBose and 15 charter members completed a beautiful wooden sanctuary and established the First Baptist Church of Vero Beach. This sedate white building with a tall steeple had a seating capacity of 300, the entire population of the city at that time. One hundred years later, a magnificent pink and white church campus encompasses an entire city block with multiple buildings for its many missions and a sanctuary for 750 worshipers.

From Friday, April 17 to Sunday, April 19, 2015, First Baptist will celebrate its 100th Anniversary with programs on its history, its prior ministers, its legendary musical presentations and its century-old involvement with the community it serves. The entire populace of Vero Beach is invited to join in a commemoration of the church’s past, present and future.

On Friday, April 17, at 7 p.m., Dr. Michael Carter and the FBC Music Ministry will present “To God Be the Glory,” highlighting the rich diversity of musical styles of the church as evidenced by the performances of Handel’s “Messiah” at Christmas and annually by the Treasure Coast Chorale and the American Guild of Organists. This program will be complete with organ, piano, brass, percussion and the talents of the Sanctuary Choir, bell ringers, and special ensembles. The audience will be invited to sing along with the great hymns of the faith. A reception will follow in the Family Life Center.

Saturday, April 18, will be a day for history as part of the community and members of the church take part in the Hibiscus Festival on 14th Avenue during the day. At 2 p.m. in the church’s sanctuary, the family of the first pastor, Dr. DuBose, who have continuously been involved in service and ministry, will present a program on his long-time influence on the Baptist faith through this church. A reception will follow in the Family Life Center.

On Sunday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m., there will be one grand celebratory worship service in the sanctuary conducted by the interim pastor, Dr. Al Brausam. Several former pastors will take part including Dr. Pete Hill, Dr. Jim Graves and Jim Newsome. The choir will be joined by brass and percussion for inspirational anthems and an Anniversary luncheon will follow the service. Reservations are requested for the luncheon and can be made at (772) 567-4341. All members of the community are invited.

First Baptist Church is located at 2206 16th Avenue in Vero Beach, across from the main library. For more information go to www.fbcvero.org or call (772) 567-4341.
