Ellen Gezork, 101, a “young” centenarian of Vero Beach, passed away on April 6, as the result of a fall.
She is survived by her loving daughter Janet, an extended caring family, and beloved friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Gezork, and three sons, Peter, Tom, and Jim.
Gezork was born in Berlin, Germany. Her life goal was to become a medical researcher, however the Nazi regime ended this dream. She met the “true love of her life” in Berlin in 1934. In 1937, she emigrated to the U.S. to marry Herbert Gezork. Her first day in the U.S. was her wedding day.
Herbert’s first teaching job in South Carolina ended dramatically due to philosophical differences with the college administration. At that time, Gezork was pregnant with her first child, Peter. Three more children were to follow. Herbert was already well respected in theological circles and he eventually became the president of Andover Newton Theological School until his retirement in 1965.
Post retirement, Herbert continued to speak and teach at various universities. In 1975, they purchased their home in Vero Beach. With Herbert’s death in 1984, Gezork began her new life as a widow, determined to live life “to the fullest and with purpose.”
The matriarch of the family, she was the epitome of gentility, composure, courage and strength. She tutored chess at Beachland Elementary, wrote poetry, and was a proud co-founding member of the Vero Beach Chess club. Family and friends were her greatest joy. She was an inspirational person, strong willed, compassionate, and gracious. She lived independently until her death.
Service will be at the Community Church of Vero Beach on April 13, at 1 p.m. Her ashes will be joined with those of her husband in Newton, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to: VNA HOSPICE, 901 37th St’ Vero Beach, FL or South Congregational Church,1066 S East St., Amherst, MA 01002.
