16 County students take top honors at State Science Fair

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Education Foundation of Indian River County is pleased to announce that 16 students, representing six public and independent schools, took top honors at the 60th State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida.

The competition was held on April 1, 2015 at the Lakeland Center in Lakeland, Fla. Twenty-three students received state bids to compete through the Indian River Regional Science and Engineering Fair that was held on Jan. 31, 2015.

Indian River County Award Winners (in alphabetical order):

Fahad Ahmed, Saint Edward’s Upper School, 11th grade: 3rd place – Behavioral Sciences – Senior Division.

Sarah A. Bickel, Storm Grove Middle School, 6th grade: 3rd place – Behavioral Sciences – Junior Division.

Jacob M. Carnell, Saint Edward’s Middle School, 7th grade: Junior Recognition – Botany

$50 cash award from the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Nishanth Chalasani, Saint Edward’s Upper School, 11th grade: 4th place – Microbiology – Senior Division.

Cheyenne L. Dong (12th grade) & Alexi K. Dong (9th grade), Indian River Charter High School: 4th place – Environmental – Senior Division.

Martha Grudens, Sebastian River High School, 10th grade: 2nd place – Physics – Senior Division. $200 cash award from Critical Minds, Certificate of Recognition and Laptop Backpack – United Sates Air Force.

Branden Houck, Indian River Charter High School, 12th grade: $100 cash award – The Trescot Award.

Olivia J. Lazorik, Saint Edward’s Middle School, 7th grade: 1st place, Zoology, Junior Division. $100 cash award – The Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services

Liam R. Livingston, Storm Grove Middle School, 6th grade: Honorable Mention – Junior Division – Chemistry.

Heather and Zoe Nevins, Storm Grove Middle School, 8th grade: Junior Recognition – Mathematics. $50 cash award (to each of them) from the Florida Association of Science Supervisors.

Kylie Oakes, Saint Edward’s Middle School, 7th grade: 3rd place, Microbiology, Junior Division.

Omar Shareef, Saint Edward’s Middle School, 8th grade: 1st place, Zoology, Junior Division. $100 cash award from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services – Winner Awards Certificate of recognition and nominations packet from Broadcom Masters.

Sana Shareef, Saint Edward’s Upper School, 9th grade: 1st place, Zoology, Senior Division, $500 cash award from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services – Innovation Award $250 cash award from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services – Winner Awards Certificate of Recognition from the United State Department of Agriculture.

Abby O.S. Stenn, Gifford Middle School, 6th grade: 4th place, Zoology, Junior Division.

Griffin Wagner, Storm Grove Middle School, 7th grade: Honorable Mention, Junior Division, Physics.
