Local “heroes” run through Vero with Special Olympics torch

VERO BEACH — Patricia Moody has participated in more than 10 years’ worth of Special Olympics, competing in the bowling and golf events, but the annual 2.5-mile Law Enforcement Torch Run is probably her favorite part of the games.

“The officers and deputies and Coast Guard, they’re my American heroes,” said Moody, 31, of Vero Beach.

“I like the ones who are very handsome the best,” she said. But which one is her favorite? “Sheriff Deryl Loar,” she replied.

Moody sang the Star-Spangled Banner while dozens of sworn officers from the Vero Beach Police Department, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, Indian River Shores Public Safety Department and other public safety agencies paid homage to the flag — some with hands on hearts and heads bowed, others with salutes.

As a motorcycle escort and an officer with the flaming Special Olympics torch led the way, the pack of runners headed north on U.S. 1, taking a water break at the major event sponsor, Publix Supermarket, then turning east on Miracle Mile and stopping at a second Publix for a break.

Backed up by Indian River County Fire Rescue with both an engine and an ambulance just in case, the torch runners crossed Indian River Boulevard and spilled out into Young Park in the fingers of Vero Isles for a barbecue lunch provided by Publix.

Police Chief David Currey said the Torch Run is just the kind of event the Vero Beach Police Department likes to support.

“It’s another part of being part of the community and helping those who may be less fortunate,” Currey said. “We try to do things that are not always law enforcement oriented all the time and we partner with other groups. We’re glad to be giving back with the Special Olympics.”

It was announced that, through activities and sponsorships related to the Torch Run, more than $18,000 was raised to support the local Special Olympics games.

Torch runs will continue this month throughout the United States and in other countries where Special Olympics games are held as a celebration of inclusivity and of the many differently talented individuals who compete.
