Sherman Kennedy Reed, 95, Vero Beach

Sherman Kennedy Reed, 95, of Vero Beach, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at the Indian River Estates in Vero Beach.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Octavia Reed of Vero Beach; his children Martin Reed (Donna) of San Antonio, Texas, Holly Johnson (Mark) of Minneapolis, Minn., and Julie Reed of Charlotte, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary-Alice Sutherland of Laramie, Wyo.

Reed was born April 11, 1919, in Chicago, Ill., son of the late Frank Hynes Reed and Helen Louise (Kennedy) Reed. In WWII he was involved with the Manhattan Project from which he earned his PhD. As head of research and development for FMC Corp. he directed the development of the fuel for the Titan rockets. He was Chairman of the Board of the Franklin (Institute) Research Center. He was listed in “Who’s Who of American Scientists.”
