FELLSMERE — The Fellsmere Police Department is searching for a driver who crashed a car and fled the scene.
Sunday night around 9:30 an officer on patrol near W. Grant Street and Vernon Street attempted to catch up to a vehicle observed traveling at a high rate of speed west on State Street, according to authorities.
The vehicle, identified as a silver, four-door Lincoln, traveled south on N. Willow from State Street and was clocked on radar going 46 mph in a 30 mph zone.
While trying to catch up to the vehicle to stop it, the officer observed it turn west on Idaho Avenue, according to police. By the time the officer saw the vehicle again, it had crashed into a parked vehicle in a driveway in the 70 block of N. Mulberry Street, and the driver had fled on foot. The driver struck the parked vehicle with enough force to push it into the garage door of the residence.
Multiple officers, Indian River Sheriff’s Office deputies, and the Sheriff’s helicopter converged on the area to search for the suspect, according to authorities. The suspect remains at large, and the case is still under investigation.
Authorities describe the driver as a black male, approximately 6 foot 2 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds and wearing a black t-shirt and camouflage shorts.
