Undercover cop steps in to stop potential stabbing

VERO BEACH — An argument between strangers in a Vero Beach gas station parking lot escalated when one man went after another with a knife, but an undercover officer at a fuel pump intervened.

The officer witnessed a man exit the passenger side of a vehicle and approach a man who had just exited an adjacent vehicle, at the Chevron gas station in the 3000 block of Aviation Boulevard in Vero Beach.

The defendant had a knife in his hand and was yelling to the victim that he was “going to kill him,” according to the arrest affidavit.

The officer, on scene by happenstance, detained Cody Koester, 23, of the 1700 block of 18th Street in Vero Beach, until the Vero Beach Police Department arrived to make the arrest.

Koester now faces one charge of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the official report, the spat between the two began over remarks made about impatience while backing out of a parking space.

The victim stated he feared Koester would have stabbed him if the officer had not immediately stopped the situation.

Koester is being held in lieu of $5,000 bond.
