INDIAN RIVER COUNTY —A teenager was arrested over the weekend, accused of attacking a man in the man’s home and battering an officer while attempting to flee from a hospital emergency room.
Kiano Serrano, 16, of Indian River County, is now in custody and faces one felony charge of battery on a law enforcement officer after he fled from the emergency room and proceeded to be confrontational with deputies, according to the official arrest report.
Due to the nature of the charge, the juvenile’s name has been released.
Authorities responded to a victim who said Serrano charged into his apartment through an open door. The victim said Serrano punched him in the face and knocked him down causing an injury to his knee.
The victim fought back in self-defense, according to authorities, which caused lacerations to Serrano’s torso.
Serrano and another man familiar to the victim, entered the apartment around the same time, and both fled before police arrived. Authorities did not identify the other person involved.
Police located Serrano in the Indian River Medical Center, but Serrano ran from the emergency room upon authorities’ arrival. He was detained in the hospital parking lot and began kicking bars and windows in the rear of a patrol vehicle. Serrano kicked the patrol car door open, striking a deputy in the head and shoulder, according to the report.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed active warrants for Serrano out of Miami-Dade County. Corrections deputies transported Serrano from the Indian River County Jail.
The charges the Miami-Dade warrants were issued for were not included in the Indian River County arrest report.
