A Helathier Me holds 5K race against diabetes March 21

VERO BEACH — With a mission to “inspire others to eat real food and to move their body,” A Healthier Me combines health, diabetes, and fitness training to protect against or manage chronic disease. Owners Colleen Symanski, RN, Certified Diabetes Educator along with Ken Symanski, Certified and Qualified Personal Trainer, recently established a non-profit foundation to bridge the gap in local services and serve a growing community need.

“Conquering diabetes is a collaborative effort. The Phil Petersen Memorial Center for Diabetes and Health aligns community resources to improve the lives of people affected by diabetes through professional training, educational programs, and awareness,” Symanski said. “This first annual ‘A Healthier ME’ 5K will help fund the foundation so we can begin to win the race against Diabetes.”

The 5K run/walk is scheduled for Saturday March 21, at 7:30 a.m. Beginning at the Portales de Vero building on the corner of Ocean Drive and Flamevine, Runners Depot will provide timing chips and route markers to ensure everyone has a great race. A mini health expo in the Portales Courtyard following the race will provide screenings, giveaways, and health information from local vendors.

“We believe your best health insurance is yourself, so encourage everyone regardless of fitness level to participate in this 5K for a healthier ME.” Symanski said.

Ken Symanski added, “We are excited to have a number of local businesses supporting the event. Florida Eye Institute has signed on as the premier race sponsor. They know first-hand how Diabetes can destroy healthy vision. Additionally, Aloha Home Care, Bay Street Pharmacy, Orchid Island Brewery, GNC, Marine Bank, SRMC, Heartbeat of the Treasure Coast, VNA, and Magic Latch are supporting the race. Businesses still have time to get involved with sponsorship or health fair booth. We’re looking forward to a fantastic, fit and fun day.”
