Ruth Reiss Barrett, 84, Vero Beach

Ruth Reiss Barrett, 84, of Vero Beach and Little Silver, N.J., passed away on Feb. 27, 2015, surrounded by her loving husband and children in Vero Beach.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Marshall Barrett; children Frank Clifford of Red Bank, N.J. Carey (Peter) Brittain of Allentown, N.J., Gregory (Theodora) Clifford of Fair Haven, N.J., Gretchen (Robert) Hudson of Mountain Lakes, N.J.; brother Theodore Reiss of Rumson, N.J.; sister Lucy Mullen of New York City, N.Y.; her grandchildren Peter, Kyle, Gretchen, Eric, Samantha, Ashley and Gregory; and four great-grandchildren Pearce, McCullough, Quinn and Weston.

She was predeceased by her parents Raymond H Reiss and Ruth Kranz Reiss, her brother Raymond Reiss and sister Rita Reiss Gorman.

Barrett was born and raised in New York City and Deal, N.J. She attended Sacred Heart School, Manhattan and Marymount College, Tarrytown, N.Y. After college, Barrett settled in Rumson, N.J. to raise her four children.

She was a communicant of The Church of the Nativity in Fair Haven, N.J. Her greatest passions were a challenging game of competitive bridge and her many friends. She was also an avid golfer being a member Rumson Country Club and Bent Pine Country Club Vero Beach. In addition, Barrett enjoyed being a long time member of Seabright Beach Club where she was often spotted in deep concentration at the bridge tables contemplating her next bid.

A wake will be held March 18 at Thompson’s Memorial Home, Red Bank N.J. from 3 to 6 p.m. The funeral will be held March 19 at Church Of The Nativity, Fair Haven, N.J. at 11 a.m. A reception will be held at Rumson Country Club, Rumson, N.J. at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to The Mental Health Association of Monmouth County, 119 Ave. of the Commons, Suite 5, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702.
