INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Save the Chimps, the world’s largest sanctuary for chimpanzees rescued from research laboratories, entertainment, and the pet trade, will host its first “Chimpathon” 16K race March 29, to benefit the rescue.
The world-class sanctuary, which is closed to the public, will allow participants to run or walk the Sanctuary grounds on March 29, 2015. The course is USATF and because it’s an inaugural race, all first place winners in six age brackets will be setting world records.
Medals will be given to all participants who cross the finish line as well as special recognition to those coming first.
The race will start at 7 a.m., and begin and end at the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds with one lap around the sanctuary. Spectators at the fairgrounds will be able to visit health and wellness booths as well as view and purchase items from local businesses.
All proceeds benefit more than 250 chimpanzees living in permanent retirement at Save the Chimps.
Save the Chimps is currently home to more than 250 rescued chimpanzees who live in large family groups on 12 separate 3-acre islands specifically designed for them. The chimpanzees are able to forage, roam, and express other natural behaviors as they live out their lives in peace.
