Fire Rescue helps deliver baby on ER ramp at hospital

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Emergency responders assigned to the Fellsmere Fire Station helped deliver a baby who just couldn’t wait to get inside the hospital, according to Indian River County Fire Rescue.

EMTs and paramedics from the Med 10 unit were transporting a pregnant mother to the Indian River Medical Center when the baby arrived, Emergency Services Director John King said. The ambulance had made it as far as the Emergency Room ramp when the child was born.

“They almost got there,” King said.

He said emergency responders had contacted the hospital en route and the obstetrics doctor met the ambulance on the ramp and delivered the baby with Fire Rescue’s assistance.

King could not identify the family or provide details about the child, citing medical confidentiality. However, he did say the baby was doing fine at the hospital.
