Two busted in Best Buy camera lens scam

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Authorities have arrested two people in conjunction with fraudulent camera purchases and returns at Best Buy.

Sade Grant, 23, of the 6100th block of 20th Street in Vero Beach, and Antherius Scott, 23, of the 18700th block of SW 319th Terr., Homestead, Fla., were the two arrested.

According to the arrest affidavit, on Feb. 8, Grant returned a Canon camera lens to Best Buy for $2,246.99, but after she left, the store managers discovered the original lens was replaced with a cheaper lens valued at $419.99. A store manager told authorities Scott accompanied Grant in the store at the time of the return.

The store manager informed police “this is [an ongoing] scheme to defraud Best Buy stores across Florida with switching the product with a less expensive product,” according to the arrest report.

The credit card used to return the purchase was stopped when the fraud was discovered.

On Feb. 12, Scott allegedly returned to Best Buy with a receipt for the original $419.99 lens, which tipped managers off to call the police.

Two other Canon products were found in the subjects’ possession according to the report.

Both subjects were arrested and each faces one count of scheme to defraud. Grant is being held in lieu of $25,000 bond. Scott is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond.
