INDIAN RIVER SHORES — Only eight types of stores will be allowed to occupy the 3,000 square feet of retail space in the planned Spectrum building on A1A between Sunset Drive and Beachcomber Lane, as per a recent recommendation by the Indian River Shores town Planning and Zoning Board.
Space could be occupied by a single tenant or several but must be limited to 1) clothes, shoes and accessories; 2) bridal registry items like china, silver and glassware; 3) art and handcrafted items; 4) housewares and home furnishings; 5) books, cards and stationery; 6) flowers; 7) spa services by appointment, or 8) customized audiovisual equipment.
The board also voted to recommend to the town council that prospective retail tenants whose services and goods fell in one of these eight categories would not need individual approval.
Several residents who own homes adjacent to the site expressed concern the board was giving up too much control with blanket approval for any store in the eight categories, instead of approving each tenant individually.
But Shores attorney Chester Clem warned: “You don’t want to say you want this kind of pottery not that kind of pottery. You don’t want to get into micromanaging.”
The board unanimously agreed.
