Charles “Charlie” Clement Evans, 91, of Indian River County, passed away peacefully at Indian River Estates on Feb. 1, 2015.
He is survived by his son Charles Fries Evans of Greenville, S.C.; two daughters Dr. Blanche Wallace Evans of Vero Beach, and Carlene Evans Holden (Gregory Lewis Holden), of Supply, N.C.; his devoted sister-in-law Alice Lee Wallace of Vero Beach; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of more than 66 years and his two sisters-in- law, Joella McDowell and Mary Carlene Willis.
Evans was born in Atlanta, Ga., on Sept. 11, 1923, the son of Charles Fries Evans and Rosa Belle Chapman Evans. He graduated North Fulton High, Atlanta, and attended the University of Georgia, Athens, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and a manager for the University football team. While there, he met his future wife, Blanche Ambrose Wallace. They were married on Dec. 27, 1944. Shortly thereafter he was sent to the European Theatre of World War II as a member of the 94th Infantry Division.
Upon his return from the war, he served as President of Evans Metal Company in Atlanta until he sold the company in 1965. In 1972 he and his wife moved to John’s Island, Indian River Shores, Florida.
Evans was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church until 2008 when he and Blanche transferred to St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church near their residence at Indian River Estates, Vero Beach.
