SEBASTIAN — The season for the Sebastian River High School Lady Sharks Rugby team kicks off on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. when Sebastian hosts Boca Raton. The game will be played at the high school in Shark Stadium, 9001 Shark Blvd., Sebastian and is open to the public. Concessions will be available.
Future home games include: Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. against Riviera Beach Maritime Academy; a tournament on March 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and April 11 at 2 p.m. against Naples.
This is the seventh season the school has offered rugby, which is a fast-paced game with few breaks in action. Players run the ball forward but must pass backward, and all players must be able to tackle and defend, making each position both offensive and defensive in nature.
“Rugby requires the running of soccer, but is similar to football in many ways,” said Coach Allan Dobson, who along with his father Peter Dobson, started the school’s rugby program in 2008 with the financial help of a start-up grant from USA Rugby.
