School Board approves new portable at Wabasso School

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River County School Board has hired a contractor to prepare a site for a new portable at Wabasso School, located on US 1, north of County Road 510.

Bill Bryant & Associates secured the $72,379 contract and is expected to have the site substantially complete by March 4 and finish installation by March 20.

The firm will be responsible for installing electrical systems, water and sewer, a concrete sidewalk, aluminum canopy sidewalk cover, delayed access door hardware, sod, and temporary fencing.

The portable classroom will be delivered and setup by Mobile Modular.

In all, the addition of a portable at Wabasso School is expected to cost approximately $115-120,000, plus $700 per month for leasing the portable.

School Board member Charles Searcy questioned installing a portable instead of building a permanent structure.

“We’re spending an awful lot of money,” he said.

Building a new, permanent structure would cost more, according to Schools Superintendent Dr. Fran Adams, as well as take time the District doesn’t have.

The Wabasso School, which teaches students with physical and mental challenges, recently took in an influx of new students and needs to provide adequate space for them. They are currently in other, temporary space.

“It’s kind of an immediate need,” Dr. Adams said.
