Sex offender nabbed for touching self on Ocean Drive

VERO BEACH — A registered sex offender from Virginia raised concerns at an Ocean Drive business and subsequently at Humiston Park on Tuesday after witnesses reported seeing him touch himself.

One witness told police, the man now identified as Steven Michael Edwards was masturbating inside of the store where the witness works and that Edwards was “fully exposed and erect.”

A second witness said Edwards followed him around the same store and then inappropriately exposed himself to the victim.

A lifeguard at Humiston Park also made a call to police dispatch in regards to Edwards who left the Ocean Drive store in the direction of the park, according to the official arrest affidavit.

Edwards, 57, of an unknown address in Sebastian, was arrested near Humiston Park shortly after police received the complaints. He now faces charges of felony sex offender fail to register, felony sex offender fail to notify DHSMV of address or name change, and misdemeanor disorderly conduct and is being held in lieu of $12,500 bond.

Edwards told police he was unaware of the requirement to register as a sex offender upon moving to Florida, according to the report.
