RANDOM PIXELS: Selfies… for all ages? Or teens?

When I was in high school, in the ’90s, no one took selfies. We had our friends take pictures of us with our film cameras.

A definition by Wikipedia:

A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. Selfies are often shared on social networking services such as Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. They are usually flattering and made to appear casual. Most selfies are taken with a camera held at arm’s length or pointed at a mirror, rather than by using a self-timer.

Who takes selfies?

Even the President of the United States was photographed taking a selfie. And if you really get into this visual/cultural quirk, there are even other gadgets to extend your reach to get more people in the photo. Not to mention if you have a drone. Photos taken using them are becoming known as dronies.

Next thing I know, if my parents ever get a smart phone, they’ll be posting selfies on their facebook page to annoy the relatives up north. They just recently moved down, exiting the freezer known as Northern Indiana.

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the self-image issues and pressure teenagers/society are putting on themselves because of selfies. Because this is a light hearted blog, I’ll just end with the hope my daughter’s generation has the mental health resources open to them to cope.
