FELLSMERE — The Fellsmere Police Department is alerting residents that a suspect is making calls, impersonating Florida Power & Light, and trying to collect overdue bill payments.
The incident happened yesterday, according to authorities. A resident reported receiving a telephone call from someone claiming to be an FPL representative by the name of “Freddy Gomez.”
Gomez told the complainant they owed $300 on their electric bill and threatened to turn off their service unless payment was made immediately.
The suspect then instructed the complainant to purchase a “Green Dot MoneyPak” card in the amount of $300 then call him back with the “14 digit number” on the card, according to police.
This scam surfaced in Florida earlier this year and FPL has advised they do not collect payment for electric service in this manner.
