John F. Duffey, 69, of Vero Beach, passed away on Dec. 7, 2014.
He is survived by his brothers Thomas Duffey and Robert Duffey; sisters Dorothy Glas and Jean Jones; and his wife Phyllis Floyd Duffey.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. Dec. 6, 1945.
Duffey grew up on Long Island, N.Y., and attended high school on Shelter Island, N.Y. In high school, he was a great science student and was the winner of the Westinghouse Science Fair in 1961 while he was still a sophomore. He enlisted in the Navy in 1963 and was on one of the destroyers involved in the Gulf of Tonkin incident that sparked U.S. Ground Troops going to Vietnam.
After Naval service, Duffey started his Plumbing business and also was a Hard Hat Deep Water Diver after moving to Vero Beach in the early 70s.
He was a master plumber and plumbing inspector for Indian River County and retired in 2006. He also was a security guard at Dodgertown.
Duffey married long time Vero Beach resident, Phyllis Floyd Duffey in 1985 and became a great father and mentor for three step-daughters.
He will be interred in the Duffey family plot on Shelter Island.
