Elizabeth DeVries Vandenburgh, 99, of Indian River Estates in Vero Beach, passed away peacefully on Dec. 3, 2014.
She is survived by her son W. Alan Vandenburgh of Vero Beach; daughter Carol V. (Harold) Mapes of North Haledon, N.J. formerly of Glen Rock, N.J.; brother Frank (Ruth) DeVries of Glen Mills, Penn.; grandchildren Jennifer M. (Kevin), Andrew D. (Crista) Mapes, Stephen G. (Annie) Mapes, Thomas E. Mapes, and William G. S. Vandenburgh; and five great- grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter A. Vandenburgh, Jr. in 1972, and her brother, Cornelius DeVries.
She was born June 10, 1915, in Clifton, N.J., to Frank and Cornelia DeVries. She graduated from Jersey City State Teachers College and began her career in Elementary Education. She taught in Fair Lawn, N.J., Charleston, S.C., and Glen Rock, N.J., before she retired and relocated to the Moorings in Vero Beach.
Vandenburgh was an active member in the Glen Rock Community Church prior to becoming a member of Christ By The Sea United Methodist Church, the AAUW of Vero Beach, Republican Women Annex, and volunteered with the Indian River Medical Center Auxiliary. She was an avid reader, knitter, and world traveler.
A Memorial Service will be held in Vero Beach. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Lyndhurst, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ By The Sea United Methodist Church, 3755 Hwy A1A, Vero Beach, Fla., or a charity of your choosing. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.
