Book Review Breakfast features Janie Gould Dec. 1

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Local radio personality Janie Gould is the featured speaker at a Book Review Breakfast sponsored by the Vero Beach branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, at the Richardson Center on IRSC’s Mueller Campus, 6155 College Lane.

Gould will review The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey by Candace Millard.

A fifth-generation Florida native, Gould graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in journalism and began her career as a reporter for the Palm Beach Post. After 20 years with newspapers, she joined the staff at public classical music station WQCS, where for the next nine years she served as writer and newscaster.

She eventually produced more than 250 segments of the popular “Floridays” series, an oral history project.

The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey is Candice Millard’s first book. A former writer and editor for National Geographic, this debut biography was a New York Times bestseller and named one of the best books of the year by the New York Times, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Christian Science Monitor, among others.

The book describes Roosevelt’s journey after his humiliating election defeat in 1912. He set his sights on the most punishing physical challenge he could find, the first descent of an unmapped, rapids-choked Amazon tributary, and he accomplished a feat so great that many at the time refused to believe it. In the process, he changed the map of the western hemisphere forever.

The book review breakfasts are being presented for the 30th year by the AAUW. They are free and open to the public; reservations are not required. A continental breakfast will be served on the veranda at 9:30 a.m., followed at 10 a.m. by the book review in the Mueller auditorium.
