An enthusiastic early-morning crowd of roughly 70 triathletes hit the waters of the Indian River Lagoon Sunday for the chilly first leg of the Capt. Hiram’s River Challenge Sprint Triathlon, the men wearing electric pink swim caps, the women green.
“We just wanted to switch things up, said Hiram’s Director of Good Times Will Collins, himself in a pink cap.
After the 500-meter swim, everyone ran to the front parking lot, grabbed bikes, swapped caps for helmets, pulled on bike shoes, and headed out on the 12-mile second leg.
Back around, helmets were ditched and shoes switched and back on the course they went for the 5K.
“It’s great racing back here at home, where I’m from,” said Best Overall winner Dustin Beller, a 2010 SRHS grad.
The event – its slogan “TRI-ing to Save Our River – hopes to “to raise awareness of the perils that face the lagoon and to showcase Sebastian.”
Mission accomplished.
