Girls on the Run of the Treasure Coast plans for the future

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Girls on the Run of the Treasure Coast envisions a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

To make this vision a reality on the Treasure Coast, the Board of Directors had a strategic planning retreat facilitated by local fundraising consultants Lenora Ritchie and Kerry Bartlett and funded by a grant from Girls on the Run International.

“The inaugural strategic plan will chart the future course for growth and services of Girls on the Run of the Treasure Coast to address the needs of girls in elementary and middle school,” said Jessica Schmitt, Girls on the Run Treasure Coast Board Chair. “Board members explored opportunities to expand the program based on anticipated needs, came to consensus on the organization’s strategic direction and then reviewed two-year priorities to achieve these goals.”

Because Girls on the Run builds leaders, the board envisions the valedictorian of 2020 will be a Girls on the Run alumnus. The gender specific program is unique and builds confidence in girls at a formative age and the board believes all girls should have access to the program in Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties.

The Girls on the Run program uses an experience-based curriculum which integrates running to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. The interactive curriculum covers meaningful topics such as self-awareness, building healthy relationships, and developing personal strengths while engaging in physical activities. The teams also participates in a community service project. Each girl will complete a 5K at the end of the season with a volunteer running buddy.
