INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Voters cast ballots for those who will represent them on the Board of County Commissioners, the Hospital District, and the Mosquito Control board, as well as answered three State Amendment questions.
Marybeth Cunningham, having received 54 percent of the vote, will fill the Hospital District seat vacated by Alma Lee Loy at the end of the year.
While Cunningham only campaigned for two months and her opponent, Laura Moss, campaigned vigorously for 10 months, Cunningham still got 22,722 votes and Moss, 19,120 because Cunningham’s “whisper campaign” reached more voters through “friends telling friends” and appealing to blocks of voters.
“It would be an honor to further serve the community through a seat on the hospital District,” said Cunningham before the election results came in.
Her background as an automotive executive gives her the business acumen that will be an asset on the District board, she said during her campaign, and years of serving on nonprofit boards will also be a plus.
An unprecedented number of people — over 42,000 — voted for the District seat.
