George P. Howland, 88, of Vero Beach, passed away on Sept. 30, 2014.
He was survived by his wife Patricia; daughters Nancy and Elizabeth; grandson Timothy; and nephews Tom and Max.
He is preceded in death by his parents George and Elsie Howland, and his sister Betty Ann Olney.
Howland was born in Rome, N.Y. on March 1, 1926. He graduated from Rome Free Academy and joined the Navy immediately following. He served from 1944 through 1946 and saw both Pacific and Atlantic theaters. He graduated from Clarkson College of Technology with a degree in Engineering under the GI Bill.
Among his business accomplishments, he and his engineering team worked with Admiral Hyman Rickover to develop the fuel core for nuclear- powered submarines. Later he worked on developing base metal coins for the U.S. Mint who adopted a metal clad “sandwich” of copper and nickel to replace the silver used in dimes, quarters and fifty cent pieces.
Howland was married to Patricia Hood on June 24, 1950; they were married 64 wonderful years. He enjoyed boating, fishing, reading and working with the Trail Gang at Grove Isle. He was a past president of the Condo Association and actively participated in conservation projects with the FEW club.
