INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — New York City Firefighter John Larocchia’s Firehouse Haz-Mat Co and Squad 288 lost 19 of its members on Sept. 11 2001. But from great tragedy came a great discovery. In the aftermath of that disaster, Larocchia learned that laughter was indeed the best medicine.
He recalls that the first time he began to feel normal again was when he was able to laugh. This inspired him to create the “Laughter Saves Lives” Comedy Tour where he travels the country raising money to support first responders across America.
Larocchia had already successfully performed stand-up comedy as a sideline to his day job in New York and this was a natural way for him to express his thanks to those who are in the front lines in any kind of emergency.
“Our goal is to support charities that support Emergency Responders and benefit Firefighters, Police, EMS and members of the military” Larocchia said. All shows are performed in memory of Larocchia’s NYFD comrades who lost their lives on 9/11.
On Oct. 24, Laughter Saves Lives will perform for the benefit of SAFER Indian River County at the Vero Beach Elks Lodge #1774. Doors open at 6 p.m. with show time at 8 p.m. There will be a cash bar and appetizers will be served. Tickets for First Responders, EMT’s, veterans, active military and CERT members are $20. General admission is $25 in advance or $30 at the door. With limited seating available this is an event most comedy lovers will want to book their seats for early.
SAFER is the community based disaster coalition that coordinates our community efforts to ensure that the needs of our community are met efficiently and quickly. The idea for SAFER was born after hurricanes ravaged cities and towns like those in Indian River County, and is an alliance of local business owners, non-profit and charitable organizations as well as local, state and federal government agencies.
SAFER volunteers respond to disasters and offer first aid, rescue operations and immediate help should the need arise. It also coordinates all local rebuilding efforts and oversees community recovery efforts.
Tickets are available by calling the Vero Beach Elks Club at (772)-562-8450 or (772)-321-6704. Online tickets can be purchased at www.laughtersaveslives.org. Sponsorships are still available and donations will be accepted. Seating is limited so it is suggested to order early.
