INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Men on the Treasure Coast will be stepping up in their red high heels for SafeSpace’s fifth annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” events set to take place in Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River Counties in October.
SafeSpace is looking for men to join these one-mile walks to step up against domestic violence and support the Treasure Coast’s only domestic violence outreach center.
“This is one of our most popular and visible events,” said SafeSpace CEO Jill Borowicz. “Even though the event is lighthearted, the message is serious. One out of every three women will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime. There is no bigger threat to women today.”
More than 400 men and their supporters raised $52,000 for victims of domestic violence last year. The key to the event’s success is a dedicated team of co-chairs who not only help coordinate logistics and recruit participants, but who can also be seen around town donning red high heels to generate buzz and promote the walks.
The 2014 Walk A Mile in Her Shoes co-chairs are:
Martin County: Rebecca Beckett, Oppenheimer & Co. Registered Client Service Associate, and Rob Ranieri, Chief Operating Officer of the Boys & Girls Club of Martin County.
St. Lucie County: Alexis Goldberg, Executive Director & Purchasing Agent at OHD Inc., and Ken Hagin, the Lead Pastor at Grace Church.
Indian River County: Lewana Dupree, Human Resource Manager at SpectorSoft Corporation, and Eric Flowers, Public Affairs Sergeant at the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
“October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this is one way that the community can come together to take a stand against this silent pandemic,” said Walk A Mile In Her Shoes Martin County Co-chair Rob Ranieri. “This is the fifth year I have been involved. Every year it grows, and every year our message is amplified.”
Martin County’s walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 4, in downtown Stuart. Tradition Square in Port St. Lucie will host St. Lucie County’s walk on Saturday, Oct. 11, and Indian River’s will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Indian River Mall in Vero Beach.
