IRSC offering Medical Coding and Documentation course

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Corporate and Community Training Institute at Indian River State College is offering a Medical Coding and Documentation Coding course that introduces participants to medical coding systems used to report physician and hospital services within all health care organizations where patients are treated. The course is offered Saturdays starting Oct. 18 to Jan. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the IRSC Main Campus in Fort Pierce.

This is an ideal course for those looking to advance their careers within the medical field and for anyone seeking to enhance their knowledge in current coding and billing.

Students will learn how to code using CPT (procedures), ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM (diagnoses) and HCPCS (supplies) coding systems. Detailed training on the new ICD-10-CM coding system being implemented this October will also be provided. Students will learn about medical record documentation requirements and various Electronic Medical Record systems used to document services rendered to patients, how to use various electronic encoder products used within the health care industry and how to comply with national fraud and abuse initiatives for all coding disciplines. The class will also touch on insurance and reimbursement methodologies within the billing cycle.

Upon completion of the class students may sit for any of the following National outpatient coding certification exams: Certified Professional Coder, Certified Professional Coder-Hospital, Registered Medical Coder, Certified Medical Coder, Certified Billing and Coding Specialist or Certified Coding Associate.

The cost of the course is $1,998 and includes all books, materials and the national exam. Businesses interested in sending their employees to this training may be eligible for the Employed Worker Training (EWT) Grant provided by CareerSource Research Coast.
