VERO BEACH — The Fighting Indians pulled off a last minute win over district rival Fort Pierce Central Monday and continued their winning ways against East Lee Friday night at the Citrus Bowl.
Vero Beach scored on every offensive possession in the first quarter. Indians’ quarterback Carter Stanley threw a thirty yard touchdown pass to receiver Sean Harvey with 9:37 left in the first. McGriff ran the ball in from the right side for Vero’s third score and a 21-0 lead.
The second quarter started off with an East Lee pass that was intercepted by Vero defensive back Anthony Pearson. Pearson’s pick set Vero Beach up inside the Jaguar five yard line where running back Spencer Chenoweth scampered into the end zone for the score.
The Vero Beach defense forced the Jags to punt again and the Fighting Indians had solid field position on their own forty-four yard line. With 9:25 to go in the second quarter freshman running back Akeem Dixon found the end zone for the fifth Vero Beach score of the half and a running clock for the remainder of the game. The Fighting Indians finished the first half off with Jason King blocking a Jaguar punt and the 35-0 lead.
The Jaguars eventually made it to the end zone on their first possession of the second half. East Lee quarterback Jeff Ratui threw a thirty yard pass to receiver Freddie Johnson with 6:08 left in the third. The extra point hit the left upright and was no good. East Lee trailed Vero Beach 35-6. The Fighting Indians answered on their next possession on a thirty-five yard touchdown catch by Kejuan Bryant. Vero Beach was successful on their two point conversion and finished off East Lee 43-6.
