Raymond L. Jones, Vero Beach

Raymond L. Jones, of Vero Beach and Nantucket, Mass., passed away on Sept. 23, 2014, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth, “Cissie” Jones; five children B.E. Jones, Carolyn Jones, Charles Jones, Storey Jones, Dr. Peter Jones; and five grandchildren.

Jones was born in Scarsdale, N.Y. in 1921, the son of Louise and Joseph Jones. He attended Colgate University. In January 1942 he enlisted in the US Navy where he trained to become a naval pilot and later taught flying to new recruits in Pensacola, Fla. He subsequently served in the Pacific where he flew PBM and PBY aircraft.

Jones began his business career as a salesman representing manufacturers of binders and sales tools before partnering with Walter Earle to open their own sales office, Earle & Jones in New York City. Jones later expanded by acquiring various related businesses to develop a complete print design and manufacturing company, the Jones-Colad Group, with sales offices and factories in New York City, Buffalo, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.

He was an elegant man who held a commanding presence and was noted for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He loved traveling with his family, and he loved his country.

Jones was a member of the Nantucket Yacht club where he formerly served as Commodore. He was also a member of Sankaty Head Golf Club, the Wharf Rat Club and Johns Island Club.
