Richard Sharp Thomspon, 88, formerly of Vero Beach, passed away on Sept. 1, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., following complications of pneumonia.
He is survived by his wife of two years, Constance Lee; daughters Judy Hildreth, Susan McMahan, and Marci Purinton; sons Mark Chambers, Scott Chambers, and Jeffrey Thompson; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Nancy Young Thompson, his wife of 55 years June Ganong Chambers Thompson, and his son Richard Sharp Thompson Jr.
Born in Mishawaka, Ind., on Sept. 14, 1925, he spent many years in Richmond, Ind., before moving to Florida in 1966. Most recently he divided his time between Boynton Beach, Fla., and Seven Devils, N.C. Until two years ago, Thompson resided in Vero Beach and Land Harbor, N.C.
Prior to his retirement, he was a Certified Public Accountant and Chief Financial Officer of Zimmer Corporation in Florida and later the owner of Preferred Business Exchange. Among his many accomplishments, he was very proud of his service in the Navy during WWII.
He was a long-time member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Linville, N.C. and enjoyed playing golf and bridge with friends from Land Harbor. While he enjoyed the warm Florida winters, he loved the beauty of the North Carolina Mountains. A private family memorial will be held sometime in the near future.
