Barbara Higgins, 72, formerly of Sebastian

Barbara Higgins, 72, formerly of Sebastian, passed away on Aug. 31, 2014, at her home surrounded by family.

She is survived by her daughter Jennifer Higgins Palmer (Emory); grandsons Emory Livingston “Bo” Palmer, Jr. and John Higgins “Jack” Palmer; brother Reginald Martin Morgan, Jr. (Kathleen); nieces Kathryn Erne Curran (David Sokolow), Pamela Erne McGeady; nephew Mark Christopher Erne (Elizabeth); many other beloved nieces and nephews; generous and caring friends near and far; kind and knowledgeable doctors, nurses and caregivers, especially Viola Howard, who let the sunshine in for her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Higgins, her sister Kathryn Elizabeth Morgan, and her sister Joan Hope Morgan Erne.

She was born Oct. 29, 1941 in White Plains, N.Y. to the late Reginald Martin Morgan and Hester Elizabeth Morgan. Higgins grew up in Armonk, N.Y. and was a 1959 graduate of Pleasantville High School. She earned her degree in elementary education from the State University of New York in New Paltz in 1963.

While a teacher, Higgins met and married her husband, John, and gave birth to her only daughter, Jennifer, in 1971.

Higgins continued teaching after her family’s move to Sebastian in 1983. She and John loved their Florida years spent golfing with friends and boating on the Indian River. After her husband’s death in 2004, Higgins moved to Newnan to be closer to her daughter and her family.

She joined the Newnan First United Methodist Church and the Beta Sigma Phi social sorority but devoted most of her time to her beloved grandsons, Bo and Jack.

The funeral is Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Newnan First United Methodist Church, 33 Greenville Street, Newnan with Dr. Stuart Greene officiating.
