Tunnel to Towers event set for Sept. 6

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Nine cities across the United States – including Vero Beach – have been honorably selected to host a Tunnel to Towers race. The Vero Beach event will take place Sept. 6 at 7:30 a.m. at Riverside Park.

Vero Beach is one of three cities in Florida to be chosen to continue this tradition. There will be one in Afghanistan and one in London as well.

This is an event that embodies patriotism and honors every Service man and women from law enforcement officers to firefighters and each and every branch of the military.

The Vero Beach event is 3.43 miles in length as a tribute to the number of firefighter’s who lost their lives on 9/11. Along the course runners will see images of every first responder who perished on 9/11.

Vero Beach and all of the surrounding cities have residents who participate as individuals or as part of a team. They brave the sweltering heat and humidity of a Florida day to attend this event. All first responders from the Sheriff’s office SWAT team, Vero Beach Police Department, to an overwhelming number of firefighters come out with their families and in full uniform walk or run this entire course. The community asks for and embraces this event each year because it is the community’s chance to be among heroes to say “thank you” for all they do each day to protect and serve their community.

Whether you walk, run or just come and cheer along the route, we want you out here on that day to show unity and to honor our very own community heroes. Families, offices, gyms sign on as teams and do this race together. It is a bonding event that will leave you proud to have contributed to such a dynamic cause.
