Lelan Cable, 87, Vero Beach

Lelan Cable, 87, of Vero Beach, passed away on Aug. 24, 2014.

He is survived by his four children, Sara McCarthy (Daniel), Melissa Sleeper (Jonathan), Faith Fritz (Roland), and Lelan B. Cable III; and nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Moira Darran Cable.

He was born the Oct. 26, 1926, in Torrington, Conn. Cable was a graduate of Admiral Billard Academy in New London, Conn., and the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.

He sailed on tankers and victory ships during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres.

Cable and his wife had 55 adventurous and loving years together before she passed. After World War II, Cable finished his studies and then worked as a ship’s officer. Next, he embarked on his career as an engineer, specializing in submarine and systems engineering.

He held a patent for flexible pipe couplings for submarines. He also test dove submarines. He retired from Tracor Applied Sciences as the Division Vice President with oversight of Systems Technology Operations.

While residing in Maryland, Cable was active in the Lion’s Club, Montgomery County Agricultural Center, the Propeller Club of D.C., and the Capital Yacht Club. He was the President, of the 3-C Club of Montgomery County. Upon retirement he moved to Florida where he was a member of the Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach Yacht Clubs.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, in the chapel of Christ Church, Vero Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to V.N.A. Hospice, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, Florida 32960. Arrangements are under the direction of the Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.
