Hundreds turn out to help child get heart transplant

Several hundred super heroes took to the streets Saturday evening along Vero’s South Beach, but the biggest hero of all in the minds of everyone there was 7-year-old Ethan Hendon.

The I {Heart} Ethan 5K and Fun Run was all about heart – from the courageous youngster wait-listed for a heart transplant at Shand’s Hospital, to a community whose hearts are beating as one in support of the family, to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, which is hoping to raise $75,000 to help offset transplant related expenses.

The son of Cassandra and Shawn Hendon, of Vero Beach, Ethan was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare defect which has required numerous open heart surgeries and other procedures.

Family and friends of this littlest of superheroes, who is never far from a Batman or Superman cape, are all praying that he will continue to defy the odds.

Their hope is that he will soon receive a new heart to give him super power strength for many years to come.
