It promises to be an to an exciting year for sports at Sebastian River High School, with some 600 to 650 students participating in football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls swimming, girls lacrosse, wrestling and boys and girls golf.
Try-outs have taken place and all the teams are formed, said Athletic Director Michael Stutzke, who said some of the early season games and fall special events will highlight the season.
The football season got under way with the Kick-Off Classic, as the Sharks faced the Jensen Beach Jaguars Aug. 27, on Jaguar turf.
The 8th Annual Scholarship Foundation football game (formerly the Dollars for Scholars game) between the rival SRHS Sharks and the VBHS Fighting Indians will take place Aug. 29 at Vero Beach, said Stutzke. For every $7 ticket sold, $2 will go to the Scholarship Foundation. Tickets are available in the SRHS Athletics Office, Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
On Sept. 9, at 7 p.m., Stutzke said, “We’re bringing in former college coach and nationally known speaker, Jack Renkens, who will talk about “Recruiting Realities”, the college athletic scholarship process. The presentation is free to all and will take place in the SRHS Performing Arts Center.
Homecoming Weekend is early this year, said Stutzke. On Thursday, Sept. 25, the Third Annual Homecoming Parade will take place along Indian River Drive, starting from the City Boat Docks and heading south to Riverview Park. All North County Schools have been invited to participate.
The Marching Sharks Band, and floats and units from the middle and grade schools will take part. Continuing the tradition, the winning float will receive a trophy from the Rotary Club of Sebastian. Following the parade, the annual Powder Puff flag football game will take place at Shark Stadium, with the annual bonfire after that.
On the following day, Sept. 26, the Sharks will play their homecoming game against the visiting St. John’s Lutheran Saints, from Ocala. “We’ve never played them before,” said Stutzke. “The team we were supposed to play, from Miami, has shut down its football program. Typically the private schools are very good, so it should be a good evening. We’re looking forward to it.”
All Sharks football game admission tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for students.
On Oct. 25, “We’ll have the oldest competition on campus,” Stutzke continued, the 21st Annual Shark Invitational Cross County Track Meet.
