After 34 years, Undersheriff Spencer ready to retire

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Undersheriff and Chief Deputy L.E. “Bud” Spencer is ready to retire. The Board of County Commissioners made the announcement Tuesday morning.

“We could just as easily make a roast out of this,” said Commissioner Wesley Davis just before reading a proclamation recognizing Undersheriff Spencer’s 34 years of service.

Undersheriff Spencer’s last official day is Aug. 31, after having been hired by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office in July 1980 and moving up the ranks to Chief Deputy in 2010.

Spencer is the longest serving member of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, according to the County Commission.

Standing at the podium with his wife at his side, Spencer said he had so many people to recognize from his career with the department.

“I wouldn’t be able to stand here and do it without the tears,” Spencer said.
