Sebastian Council gives its blessing to bring disc golf to park

SEBASTIAN — Disc Golf will soon be coming to Sebastian. At its Aug. 13 meeting, the Sebastian City Council voted 5-0 to add the wildly popular family-friendly sport to the City’s recreational offerings.

With the vote, the Council approved the Parks and Recreation Committee and Parks Superintendent Chris McCarthy’s request to appropriate $18,000 from Recreational Impact Fees to install a Disc Golf Course at the City’s Stormwater Park.

McCarthy told Council that numerous citizens have suggested the idea to him. He has visited other successful area Disc Golf courses, and says the sport is inexpensive to establish and operate and popular with all ages and skill levels.

Vice Mayor Jim Hill said he too has seen other courses and was strongly in favor of bringing one to Sebastian.

“I was shocked to see how many people do this,” he said. “They have their own little bags and special discs. It’s insane.”

Councilwoman Andrea Coy said she greatly appreciates the planned project being expedited by staff, and agreed that the idea is a good one.

Having Disc Golf available, she commented, “could be a tourist draw.”

City Manager Joe Griffin expressed appreciation to McCarthy, the “parks and recreation guru,” for “doing the heavy lifting,” in researching and preparing the project proposal.

The City plans to start the project as soon as it gets a go ahead from the St. John’s River Water Management, due to the project’s planned location in Stormwater Park.

Responding to a couple of questions and concerns from the public, Mayor Bob McPartlan said the project will still need to go through all the required City channels.

“It’s not set in stone,” Coy added. “We want to make it good for everybody.”
