SEBASTIAN — With support from staff, council and the public, a request to reduce the speed limit on Fleming Street from 35 mph to 30 mph was granted.
Several members of the public spoke about frequent speeding along Fleming and the dangers to pedestrians, students waiting for the school bus, and residents attempting to back out onto the road.
Several speakers said that, even with the speed limit reduction, there would have to be more enforcement if the problem was to be solved.
Vice-Mayor Jim Hill supported the reduction, but reminded everyone that Fleming is a collector road, designed to handle a big traffic load.
Council noted that most streets in the vicinity are already at 30 mph. Council member Andrea Coy said she could hear the traffic speeding on Fleming from her home, not on Fleming, and agreed that “maybe we should start giving out tickets.”
The “yes” vote was unanimous.
