UPDATED: Driver in fatal crash on A1A identified

VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach Police Department has confirmed Trevor Smith, 74, of W. Island Club Square, Vero Beach, was the driver of a 2011 Jaguar that collided with a utility pole Tuesday evening.

Smith was traveling north on A1A when he crossed the center-line just north of Bahia Mar Road and hit the pole.

He was extricated from his vehicle and transported to the Indian River Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, according to a statement released by the Vero Beach Police.

Smith was Treasurer of the Hospital District Trustees Board. He had filed for re-election and was faced with a challenger, Alan Jones.

Due to Smith’s death and no other candidates, Jones will receive the seat on the board.

Smith was also an avid member of the Vero Beach Bridge Club.
