Historic fish house restoration remains on track

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Architectural and engineering firm, Atelier AEC, is on schedule to complete its design, permit applications, and bid document tasks in regards to the Archie Smith Fish House property.

In 2007, the Board purchased approximately 1.15 acres containing three historical structures, including the fish house, boat dock and ice house, located at 1740 North Indian River Drive in north Sebastian. The structures had been badly damaged by the 2004 hurricanes and in 2007, were secured to “prevent further deterioration,” according to provided background information.

A State Division of Historical Resources grant was awarded to the County in 2012 which would cover 50 percent of the estimated $99,000 cost to “develop detailed restoration plans and construction drawings for restoration of the fish house and associated structures.”

The long-term plan is to restore the fish house into a small museum, restore the ice house, and repair the dock to provide boat access, according to official documentation.
